Our Online Experience – FAQs
ALVS’s courses are developed to cover the college preparatory content that students need to master, and because we provide interactive supports and scaffolds to access that content and learn from it, our online students are consistently successful.
A student’s educational experience is personalized immediately upon enrollment. Experienced guidance counselors work with each student and their adult advocate to determine the level of rigor and number of courses. A challenging, but manageable course load is designed for each student. Throughout enrollment, guidance counselors review progress and share best practices and strategies to support high student achievement within our program. Frequent communication is made between students, parents, and instructors to offer schedule support and academic enrichment.
Live chat is available Monday through Friday, 7am-5pm PST. Our online tutors are available to answer questions and assist students in navigating their coursework.
Your teacher will respond to questions asked using our message center or you can request to speak by phone or video to receive help and support in your course.
In addition, a weekly progress report is emailed to designated adults for the duration of the course. Designated adults – we call them coaches – can be parents, guardians, local school staff, tutors, or mentors. These reports enable the coach to help their student stay on track and motivated. ALVS research shows that adult engagement is a key indicator of success for online students.
At ALVS, we understand that connecting with other students is one of the most important parts of a great school experience. Online school activities serve as excellent extracurricular activities for children of all ages. Whether a student is interested in chess, robotics, poetry, art, the environment, or a myriad of other hobbies, ALVS has the perfect club.
Our wide range of online school activities and clubs allows students the opportunity to:
- Easily make friends
- Connect with other students across the world
- Develop leadership skills
- Explore new interests and expand their knowledge
- Participate in fun contests and competitions
- Have fun!
Our Upper School counselors provide advice tailored to the goals of each student. For example, student athletes receive guidance about NCAA eligibility and academic plans appropriate to their collegiate sports pursuits. For students who intend to apply to a public California university, school counselors assist with specific coaching about approved courses.
