For many high school students, balancing academics with personal passions can feel like a constant tug-of-war. But for Dylan, the flexibility of virtual learning through Apex Learning made it possible to pursue a life that’s anything but ordinary.
Currently working at a coffee shop and training nearly 18 hours a week in mixed martial arts, Dylan wanted to pursue his dreams—all while staying on track academically. He needed a learning model that would adapt to his life, not the other way around.
“I really wasn't a fan of the eight hours a day sitting in a classroom just doing work,” Dylan explained. “[This gave] me the freedom to do more than just school all day.”
Unlike traditional schooling, which often demands long hours in a classroom, Apex Learning allowed him to structure his day around his goals. He picks the hours he wants to dedicate to schoolwork, freeing up time for work shifts and intense training sessions. That flexibility has been a game-changer.
“I might work a 7-to-3 shift, then come home or even do a couple of assignments during my lunch break,” described Dylan. “It’s that adaptable.”
One of the standout features for Dylan is the self-paced structure. Rather than juggling multiple subjects at once, he focuses on one class at a time—diving deep into English for a few weeks, then switching to science or math. This focused approach helps him absorb material more effectively and stay engaged.
“My brain’s only focusing on one subject, so I’m really absorbing the material better,” said Dylan.
The support system at Apex Learning also plays a crucial role. Teachers provide detailed feedback, especially in subjects like math, where small mistakes can derail an entire assignment. But instead of penalizing him, they guide him through corrections and encourage resubmissions.
Beyond academics, Apex Learning Success Coaches have helped Dylan plan for the future. Whether he was considering the military or shifting focus to college, they provided personalized guidance, helped review transcripts, and ensured that he was on track for graduation—and beyond.
“They’re not just making sure you pass high school” Dylan indicated. “They’re helping you prepare for what comes next.”
Graduating a year early wasn’t his original goal, but as Dylan progressed through the program, it became a natural outcome of his dedication and the school’s flexibility. Now, while many of his peers are still in 11th grade, he’s preparing for college.
“If I didn’t have [Apex Learning], I don’t think I’d be able to work 30 hours a week or train in martial arts,” informed Dylan. “It’s helped me grow in school and outside of it.”
Dylan’s story is a powerful reminder that education doesn’t have to come at the expense of personal growth. With the right support and structure, students can shape their own paths—and thrive in every part of their lives.
