Students and Families Explain Why Apex Learning Was Right for Them

Students come to Apex Learning for many reasons, but one thing they have in common is that each is making a deliberate choice to solve a problem. Sometimes it’s a conflict with traditional schedules. Sometimes it’s a need for more individualized pacing. Sometimes it’s access to specific coursework that local offerings can’t provide. Often, it’s a combination of these things and more.

We asked Apex Learning students and their families how they knew they had made the right choice to enroll. Here’s what they told us:

Students Are Learning More Deeply—at Their Own Pace

For many students, the decision stems from a natural love of learning and a need for acceleration. They genuinely want to spend more time with a subject and not rush through it. Several of them told us they enrolled in online courses simply because they were interested in learning more deeply than a traditional classroom pace would allow.

“I was super interested in chemistry but wanted an opportunity to really spend time on learning it and learn as much as I can,” said one student. “Apex Learning was recommended by friends who said such incredible things about this program. I looked into it and told my mom, ‘I definitely want to do this.’ Overall, the ability to go at your own pace and to learn things in a deep manner encouraged me to sign up for this course.”

Others echoed that reason for enrolling, adding that the freedom to revisit lessons, review explanations, and really dig into challenging concepts helped them retain more and feel more confident moving forward.

This is especially impactful in subjects like math and science, where understanding builds cumulatively. Students described how structured lessons, frequent checks for understanding, and the ability to slow down when needed made the learning feel more manageable so they could learn more deeply.

Traditional School Schedules Didn’t Work for Them, But This Does

For some families, the decision is driven by logistics. Student athletes, performers, students with jobs, and families who travel frequently describe how rigid school schedules can make it difficult to balance academics with other aspects of their lives.

“I wanted to continue taking Spanish and further my education in world languages while being a full-time athlete,” shared one student. “The best part about Apex Learning is that if I needed help, I was able to contact my teacher, but it helped me learn how to study by myself and learn more independence. It’s basically like in-person classes, but you can do it whenever is best for you.”

Online learning gives those students a way to realign their priorities with flexible timing that allows them to complete assignments when they’re prepared to do so, rather than squeezing schoolwork into already packed days. For athletes, the ability to work asynchronously makes it possible to stay focused, step away for training, and return to their coursework when they were ready.

Parents frequently emphasize how this flexibility reduces stress at home. Instead of schoolwork competing with practices, competitions, or travel, they can now plan learning around real schedules, making school feel sustainable again.

Local Schools Couldn’t Provide Everything They Needed

Access is another major driver. Many students enroll because their schools don’t offer the courses they want or need, including advanced math, world languages, AP classes, and electives that conflict with required coursework.

Apex Learning is filling those gaps. Many of our students enrolled because they wanted to take accredited courses that transfer cleanly and count toward graduation, but their local options were limited. One parent said online language courses made it possible for their child to earn credits in subjects the school simply didn’t offer. Another shared that their child was able to complete honors geometry at an accelerated pace, allowing her to stay challenged without giving up other classes:

“She excelled in the program—was able to manage it on her own at an accelerated pace, and her teacher was always available and helpful.”

For students, this access means real, meaningful opportunity without compromise. They can advance academically, explore new subjects, and meet graduation requirements without rearranging the entire academic experience.

Many Students Just Need a Different Way to Learn

There are a host of additional reasons for enrollment decisions. Some students come to Apex Learning after transferring from another school, falling behind in their existing work, or navigating medical or learning challenges that make traditional classrooms untenable for their unique situations. The flexibility of Apex Learning is the most essential element that these students need to stay engaged and motivated. For example, online learning can take the pressure off students with IEPs:

“I have learning challenges (Dyslexia) and History requires more reading than some other subjects. Apex Learning allows me to take the time I need for reading and re-reading the material at my own pace without the stress of a classroom pace.”

Parents echoed that sentiment, sharing stories about how Apex Learning has helped their children rebuild confidence while staying on track for graduation. Rather than forcing students to repeat entire courses or feel permanently behind, it empowers them to focus on mastering what they truly need and move forward with clearer direction.

Taking Ownership Helped Students Develop Great Study Skills

Families were candid about an important reality: online learning requires responsibility. Students need to be able to manage their time, stay organized, and ask for help when they need it. What has made the difference to many of these families is the consistent teacher support that they get with Apex Learning.

“My online experience with Apex Learning significantly boosted my confidence and preparedness in the subject by combining structure, support, and real-time feedback,” said one student. “The clearly outlined deadlines and assignments encouraged me to take ownership of my learning, helping me stay organized and proactive. Whenever I hit a stumbling block, being able to schedule an appointment with a dedicated teacher gave me the assurance I wouldn’t stay stuck—and each session clarified concepts and strengthened my understanding.”

With Apex Learning, accountability doesn’t disappear just because learning happens online. Clear expectations and regular feedback are built into every course, helping students stay on track while reassuring families that their children are engaged in a truly rigorous, supportive, and affordable virtual school experience.

Choice Is the Common Thread

Students are coming to Apex Learning because they need school to fit their lives while helping them overcome barriers and achieve their goals. We give them just that, with a refreshing mix of pacing, support, and flexibility that makes the choice to enroll an empowering step in each student's academic journey.
